The Al Ikram association launched a pilot project in September 2022 aimed at making Casablanca waste pickers ambassadors for the environment.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Al Ikram association unveils its pilot project aimed at supporting rag pickers in Casablanca to make them true ambassadors for the environment.

This initiative is the result of capitalizing on the association’s experience in selective sorting and collection from companies in compliance with health and safety standards. In this sense, the association wishes to put its experience both in the profession and socio-economic support at the service of this target. Consequently, the desired impact is to promote a decent life for these “ragmen” while supporting them in the process of practicing their profession in compliance with health and safety rules.

Mobile waste collectors play a vital role in preserving the environment by collecting and then sorting upstream waste destined to be taken to a landfill causing more pollution. They thus make it possible to integrate into the circuit of reuse or recycling of waste whose end of life was approaching. However, they are often marginalized and face difficult working conditions. The Al Ikram association is committed to supporting them more in order to change this reality and to transform their conditions in a participatory approach in pursuit of a positive impact on the environment.

This ambitious project has several components:

  • Training for their professional development – technical component
  • Training for their professional development
  • entrepreneurial support component
  • Personal development workshops
  • Logistic support through the acquisition of equipment
  • Training for their professional development – technical component

First of all, the Al Ikram association plans to offer technical training to scavengers, in order to strengthen their skills and expertise in terms of selective sorting, optimization of their logistics. At the same time, the Al Ikram association pays particular attention to the hygiene and safety of the scavengers. Specific training is provided to make these street collectors aware of good hygiene practices, the proper use of personal protective equipment and the prevention of risks related to their activity. By providing uniforms, suitable gloves and putting in place appropriate safety measures, the Al Ikram association aims to guarantee a safe and healthy working environment for scavengers.

These trainings will enable them to become environmental ambassadors, able to share their knowledge and inspire other members of the community to adopt environmentally friendly practices.

  • Personal development workshops

By emphasizing their personal development and challenging their business model, this project offers itinerant waste collectors the opportunity to become independent, increase their profits and play an active role in preserving the environment. by becoming a model for other players in the business.

  • Training for their professional development – entrepreneurial support component

In addition to technical training and health and safety measures, the Al Ikram association continues to promote entrepreneurship among scavengers. The association helps them gain their independence by offering them social and legal support to guide them through the administrative and legal procedures related to their activity. In addition, Al Ikram is setting up a network for the sale of their recyclable raw materials, thus enabling them to access stable outlets and maximize their income.

  • Logistic support through the acquisition of equipment

Anxious to optimize the working time of the scavengers, the Al Ikram association provides them with adequate equipment, in particular vans and scooters, to facilitate the collection and transport of materials. The association also offers secure storage spaces, allowing the scavengers to keep their materials in optimal conditions.

This innovative project, through its capitalization on the experiences of the Al Ikram association, offers a promising perspective for waste pickers in Morocco, by transforming them into ambassadors for the environment and offering them concrete opportunities to improve their living conditions. and work, while ensuring the practice of their profession in compliance with health and safety standards.
