The fight against maternal mortality is close to the heart of the former Minister of Health, Prof. Thérèse N’Dri Yoman. Godmother of the Association of Women Doctors, she encouraged them to persevere in the fight against this phenomenon. “No woman should die in childbirth. We draw everyone’s attention so that maternal mortality falls. This must be everyone’s business, healthcare staff, families and communities; everyone must participate in maternal reduction by taking the necessary actions,” said Thérèse N’Dri Yoman on Saturday, February 24, during the review ceremony of the Association of Women Doctors of Ivory Coast. (Afmci) in Abidjan. It should be noted that maternal mortality has fallen in Côte d’Ivoire. From 614 in 2011, it rose to 385 deaths per 100,000 births in 2022. However, it remains high, given the efforts made by the government in the fight against maternal mortality over the last 10 years. Taking stock of these activities, Dr Aimé Aka Sandrine, president of the Association, also a specialist in public and community health, noted that the Afmci has 290 female doctors from different specialties, practicing in the public or private sector, academic or not, resident in Ivory Coast or outside the country and 6 honorary members. Afmci is committed to highlighting the place and skills of women doctors in public, economic and social life and to supporting their projects. For her, her organization is a young association which has great ambitions, with the objective of supporting the efforts made by the State of Côte d’Ivoire in strengthening the well-being of the populations. The programmatic assessment of the association was presented by its general secretary, Dr Koné Anna. She declared that Afmci organized an awareness and screening campaign for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)/HIV-Aids. During this activity, approximately 130 teachers and parents of students were made aware and acquired knowledge about sexually transmitted infections. Dr Koné Anna noted from his presentation that the association is faced with a lack of material and financial resources to work towards achieving this main objective.

In terms of prospects, Afmci intends to strengthen social assistance and its communication actions. During this review meeting, Dr. Eylem Odacilar, obstetrician-gynecologist, representing Medical Park Clinic of Turkey, made a presentation on gynecological, laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery.
