A committee of Lanaudière users, who find it absurd that access to a free WI-FI connection is not the norm throughout the health network, is trying to change things.

In many health establishments in Quebec, you still have to pay to use the Internet. Others simply don’t offer the service.
“It is not normal that at McDonald’s, we have access to the Internet, and in our own resident rooms at home, because it is a living environment, we do not have access to the Internet”, supports the president of the Council for the protection of the sick, Paul Brunet,
A committee of users from Lanaudière has been fighting for three years against the Ministry to allow the Pierre-Le Gardeur hospital, in Terrebonne, as well as three CHSLDs in the area, to offer free access to the Internet.
“We were fooled for three years and, in the end, it cost $20,000! I do not find that it is a sum that is very, very, very considerable, ”claims the president of the Users’ Committee of the CISSS du Sud de Lanaudière, Louise Henrichon.
The Pierre-Le Gardeur hospital will finally have its free Internet connection in the fall. However, it is not the same story for the three CHSLDs in Lanaudière, where residents who live there permanently will still have to do without.
“It’s a living environment, huh? This is their last place of residence, the CHSLD. So why aren’t they allowed access yet in 2023? Me, I find it incomprehensible, ”says Ms. Henrichon.
Although in Montreal, several hospitals have free Internet connection, the situation is far from being the same in the regions.
“Half of the CHSLDs are equipped. We think about equipping their users. The other half, there is nothing”, explains Paul Brunet.
The Ministry of Health, as well as the office of Minister Christian Dubé did not answer questions from TVA Nouvelles on Thursday. As for the users’ committee, it is asking the Minister for universal access to the Internet in all health establishments in Quebec.
