Understanding Italy’s Healthcare System

Italy operates under a National Health Service (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale or SSN), providing universal healthcare to citizens and legal residents. Recent data indicates that Italy spends approximately 9% of its GDP on healthcare, slightly below the EU average but with comparable health outcomes.

The system is decentralized, with regions responsible for organizing and delivering services. This can lead to variations in quality and access across different areas. Though, the core principles of universality, equity, and solidarity remain central to the SSN.

The Aene’s Day Medical Service is part of the effort to strengthen primary care within this framework, ensuring that local communities have reliable access to essential medical services.
