SYDNEY (AP) — Lauren James scored after six minutes in her first start at the Women’s World Cup on Friday as European champions England beat Denmark 1-0.

Substitute Amalie Vangsgaard came close to leveling in dramatic fashion near the end with a header hitting the post, but England held on to record back-to-back wins.

The forward, who came on as a substitute to score Denmark’s winning goal against China in the first Group D match, beat England goalkeeper Mary Earps but her shot hit the post.

James, who started as a substitute in their opening game against Haiti, quickly made an impression after being considered a starter by coach Sarina Wiegman.

James received the ball outside the box and shot just beyond the reach of goalkeeper Lene Christensen to give England the lead.

With this goal the English tied Norway’s record of 15 consecutive duels in the tournament scoring.

While the win puts England on the brink of qualification from Group D, they took a hit when midfielder Keira Walsh injured her knee in the first half and had to be stretchered off.
