Wiegman completed 104 caps for the Netherlands in her playing career. After that, she moved to the sidelines and quickly found success. After stints at various clubs, in 2016 she was the first woman to work on the coaching staff of a professional men’s team (Sparta Rotterdam), she switched to the Dutch association. She won the European Championship title in women’s football with the Netherlands (2017) and England (2022). She was the first to achieve this feat with two nations.
In addition, Wiegman was with the Netherlands in the 2019 World Cup final, which they lost to the USA. With the final on Sunday, she is moving into her fourth final in a row – a record. In 2017, 2020 and 2022 she was named Fifa World Coach of the Year. Since taking over as England coach in 2021, she has played 38 games with the Lionesses – losing only once.
She could even follow England’s men’s national coach Gareth Southgate and train superstar Harry Kane and Co. FA boss Mark Bullingham answered a question before the final: “People always say it’s the best man for the job or the best Englishman. Why does it have to be a man? I think our answer is always: It’s the best person for the job.”

After the win over Australia, Wiegman sat at the match press conference. And the 53-year-old apologized. “I’m sorry,” she said when England’s team ended Australia’s title dream. A small episode that shows how the trainer with the golden glasses ticks. FA Director Sue Campbell says of her: “We knew we were hiring the best tactical coach in the world. What we didn’t know was that we were getting this extraordinary person.”

Sarina Wiegman has been married to Marten Glotzbach for many years. The two have two daughters together: Sacha and Lauren Glotzbach. Above all, the Dutch woman keeps her family private, snapshots from everyday life are a rarity – and if so, she posts photos with her husband. When she was still playing football and early in her career as a coach, she also worked as a physical education teacher.
