Enhancing Road Safety and Gentle Mobility in Braives: Innovative Measures and Cycling Network

They did not go unnoticed in the streets of Braives. Small green plots have “grown” along certain roads in the town. At Rue du Tumulus, the bollards even encroach on the cycle lane, as has been highlighted on social networks.

Not enough to make a big deal out of it for the mayor of Braives, Pol Guillaume. “We must not forget that this colored strip intended for bicycles is a suggested cycle lane and not a cycle path. It is suggested and not obligatory. Bicycles can very well get out of it.” But the Municipality plans to find a solution to satisfy everyone. “We are going to remove the posts at the ends. That way, the bikes can stay on the suggested lane.”

30 targeted zones

These road narrowings aim to reduce the speed of drivers who are often singled out, as Pol Guillaume explains. “We regularly have complaints from residents regarding the speed of cars on their street that is too high. We notice that speed limits are far too often ignored, particularly in 30 zones.” Some of these infrastructures, installed on rue du Tumulus, replace the old speed bumps which were no longer of much use. “They had served their time and their impact was less. Here, we favor priority of passage. And if motorists respect the limits, traffic should go smoothly.” An initiative supported by the Walloon Region and validated by the entire municipal council.

Promote gentle mobility

The challenge for the Commune? Satisfy all users on the 160 streets of Braives. “We are trying to find the best way to bring all road users together in complete safety.” This is why projects to encourage car-free travel and protect weak users are flourishing more and more in the entity. As is the case with its cycling network created across the eight villages that make it up, “We want to put in place infrastructure that makes residents want to opt for soft mobility.”
