Enhancing Soil’s Water Absorption: The Role of Vegetation and Biodiversity

2023-08-04 19:13:10

Faced with the intense rainfall that has affected Belgium, the question arises of how the soil absorbs the rain. The problem is all the more important as the intensity of the rains has been repeated on a regular basis over the past two weeks.

Questioned by RTL, Aurore Degré, professor of soil physics and hydrology at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech, explains that it is not possible to change the nature of the soil and that it is therefore essential to put prevention in place. The specialist informs that the best way to help a soil to infiltrate water is to plant vegetation on it. She points out that ideally, there should be some diversity. Soil inhabited by wildlife will react better to recurrent heavy rains.
