Enhancing the Liège – Luxembourg Railway Line: Improving Speed, Comfort, and Convenience

2023-10-13 08:50:39

How to make the Liège – Luxembourg railway line more attractive?

Several unions and commuter associations are concerned about the lack of investment on this line which was saved in 1980.

For them, the letter of intent from the Belgian and Luxembourg Mobility Ministers to improve rail transport between the two countries focuses solely on the Brussels-Luxembourg line. The other lines are a little forgotten, including line 42.

In 2020, this line still benefited from a notable improvement, the move to one train per hour rather than every two hours, but since then, there has not been enough investment according to these associations and unions. Laurent Brock, permanent secretary CGSP railway workers Liège-Verviers-Huy-Welkenraedt, however, underlines that this increase in the frequency of trains has had a beneficial effect and that we must therefore continue to improve the offer: ” In any case, we noticed towards Liège that since the timetable, the number of travelers has almost doubled. This is really the dynamic, when we increase supply, the number of commuters increases. So, we must continue to improve the offer, particularly in the morning for workers and students “.

Michaël Jacquemin, doorThe word of the Friends of Rail non-profit association also believes that faster trains are needed. ” LThe journey time is 2h39 and in “Desiro” trains, it’s not really very comfortable. We are waiting for a more suitable speed and more suitable equipment as well.

René Birgen, from the association for the promotion of public transport in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, also insists on these two points: ” The commercial speed is 2h39, it’s not very competitive, compared to the car, by the highway, we lost the battle! And then in terms of comfort, the seats are quite narrow, it’s a regression from the old hardware.

This line is frequented by approximately 660 to 750 travelers per week.
