Ensuring Food Safety: Saudi Food and Drug Authority Imposes Heavy Penalties on Violating Facility

In a bold and necessary step to ensure food safety, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority imposed heavy financial penalties that exceeded the barrier of one million riyals against a food facility in Riyadh. This decision came after the facility was caught red-handed by amending the expiration dates of products similar to feta cheese, which constitutes a blatant challenge to food laws and puts public health at stake.

Judicial control and strict procedures

The Authority did not hesitate to take its deterrent measures, as it seized and destroyed more than 1.4 tons of products that were infested with mold and impurities, which is only the tip of the iceberg in the list of violations. To make matters worse, the Authority monitored that the product exceeded the specified limits for humidity, with complete neglect of mandatory reporting upon discovering any deviations from the established standards, which means that the establishment neglected its basic duties towards consumers and applicable laws.

Promoting awareness and commitment to transparency

The Authority’s emphasis on the importance of transparency and credibility in dealing with foodstuffs comes as an absolute priority. According to Article 16 of the Food Law, practices that endanger the health of consumers or mislead them are prohibited. Likewise, Article 44 of the Executive Regulations clarifies the rules for what is known as “food adulteration,” which prohibits amending the expiry date without obtaining prior approval from the Authority, which reflects the seriousness of the official position towards any attempts to tamper with the applicable systems.

Article 20 requires food establishments to immediately report any doubts or uncertainty about products conforming to specifications, stressing the need to take steps to withdraw food from the market if necessary. These laws reflect the Authority’s efforts to maintain a strict diet that protects the rights and health of consumers.

Community oversight and the role of the citizen

The Authority encourages citizens to engage in maintaining food security by reporting any violations, which enhances community oversight and embodies community partnership in protecting consumers. By applying “Tamni”, the Authority facilitates the reporting process for individuals, ensuring a quick and effective response to address unethical practices.

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority demonstrates that it is very vigilant and serious in protecting public health and ensuring fair commercial practices, a position that is considered a role model in health control and protection for consumers.
