The Confederation, cantons and municipalities share responsibility for road infrastructure. The most important communication routes of interest to Switzerland are declared national roads by the Federal Assembly, explains Ofrou on its website. The Confederation builds, maintains and operates national roads. The only exception is the completion of the network of national roads which, for historical reasons, remains a joint task of the Confederation and the cantons. Municipalities and cantons, for their part, take charge of the road infrastructure located on the cantonal and communal roads of their territory. Everyone is responsible for the construction, maintenance and operation of their road network. As of January 1, 2022, the network of national roads had 2254.5 kilometers.
