Journalists under surveillance in Hungary, prosecutors and lawyers spied on in Poland and opposition politicians bugged in Greece: there is a problem in the European Union with the misuse of spy software. This was shown not least by research by numerous media, which disclosed the use of the Israeli Pegasus software in many countries in 2020. As a result, an investigative committee of the EU Parliament dealt with the matter and made inquiries. The committee’s report is now to be approved by the committee on Monday evening – but skirmishes are likely to ensue.
