TURKISH PRESIDENT Recep Tayyip Erdogan strongly supported UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ recent remarks on Security Council reform, stressing the need for a fairer global system that includes African representation.

In a statement responding to Guterres’ remarks at X, Erdogan said, “The structure of the UN Security Council, which is not fulfilling its duty to ensure global peace and security, must be fundamentally changed.”

Erdogan’s comments came after Guterres said, “The Security Council was designed by the victors of World War II. However, the world has changed. The world has changed but the composition of the Council has not kept pace.”

“Your (Guterres’) sincere and loud views on the need for the UN Security Council to reform in accordance with the current conditions and in a fair manner are very valuable for the world to have a fair system again,” Erdogan said.

Pledged Turkey’s continued support for the establishment of a just international system, he said, “We will continue to support all friends who are fighting for a just international system and the UN Security Council which is following today’s situation.”

The Turkish president specifically addressed the lack of African representation on the council. “The African continent and all our African brothers must be given the opportunity to contribute to this just system.”

“In response to these expectations, we will continue to say that the world is bigger than five (countries) and act with the understanding that a more just world is possible,” he said. (Ant/Z-2)
