Erykah Badu and The Alchemist have officially released their long-awaited collaborative album, Before the World Blows, delivering a 16-track masterclass in independent artistry. From a Mobb Deep Inspiration to a 16-Track Journey
As The Alchemist revealed in an interview reported by Billboard, the collaboration began when Badu expressed a desire to rap over the producer’s instrumental for “The Realest” from Mobb Deep’s 1999 album, Murda Muzik. That initial spark evolved into a full-scale creative exploration.
The resulting album, also referenced in early discussions as Abi & Alan, bypasses industry formulas in favor of raw sonic textures. Rather than chasing radio trends, the duo spent a year and a half refining a soundscape that highlights The Alchemist’s understated versatility alongside Badu’s iconic cadence.
Star-Studded Collaborations and Visual Sequels
Before the World Blows boasts an impressive roster of guest artists and instrumentalists. The tracklist features contributions from Westside Gunn, Steve Lacy, Thundercat, Earl Sweatshirt, Kamasi Washington, Joi, DRAM, and DJ Creole Princess, alongside percussion by DJ Quik and mixing efforts from Young Guru. Tracks like “Black Box” with Kamasi Washington and “I Know That Man” featuring Earl Sweatshirt push the project into deeply spiritual, genre-bending territory.
