2023-09-02 10:00:00

The blue planet has become uninhabitable? This is the premise of several science fiction films, including Polaris, which has just taken the poster. Here are five feature films to quench your thirst for apocalyptic escape this weekend…

The Midnight Sky (2020)

Augustine Lofthouse (George Clooney) is the last human on the planet. Sick, he refused to evacuate Earth. When he realizes that a ship, theAether, returns to Earth from a moon of Jupiter, he does everything to warn the crew members (composed of Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Tiffany Boone, Demián Bichir and Kyle Chandler) to return to where they came from. Released in the midst of a pandemic – in December 2020 – the feature film won an Oscar nomination for its special effects.

Interstellar (2014)

The Earth is sick and humanity is on the brink of extinction in the year 2067. Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a former NASA pilot turned farmer, will travel through space in search of a new habitable planet. The particularly convoluted scenario ofInterstellar is the work of Jonathan and Christopher Nolan, the former having spent four years learning about theories of relativity. The feature film has also been praised by researchers for the accuracy of the scientific elements. No less than seven times nominated for the Oscars, Interstellar grossed $715 million at the box office.

Available on Prime Video and Apple TV.

Elysium (2013)

Neill Blomkamp’s second feature film (District 9), of which the Grand Touring is currently in theaters, Elysium stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, as well as Sharlto Copley and Alice Braga. We find there themes and a social commentary dear to the filmmaker who follows here a former criminal on this Earth of 2154, polluted and almost uninhabitable, which the rich have left to go and live on the Elysium orbital station.

Don’t Look Up (2021)

What happens when a comet crashes into Earth? Nobody cares and astronomers Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) and Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) try in vain to convince humans of the imminence of the danger. A fierce critic of contemporary society, the Don’t Look Up d’Adam McKay (The legend of Ron Burgundy et Vice) is a scathing comedy with a powerful message – the allegory with climate change is unmistakable – which also stars Cate Blanchett, Ron Perlman and Meryl Streep as the unforgettable President of the United States.

Wall-E (2008)

In 2805, the Earth is a huge desert dump. Only the Wall-E robot is there to clean up. When he meets EVE, a robot sent to the planet to detect possible traces of life, he falls in love with her and decides to follow her to the ends of the universe. Criticism of the consumer society in which we live, Andrew Stanton’s animated feature won an Oscar in addition to being nominated in five other categories.

Available on Disney+, Prime Video and Apple TV.
