Escaped peacock has been busy animal rescue in Linz for three weeks

LINZ. One or the other walker was recently able to enjoy a very special sight in the Linz district of Urfahr: An escaped peacock has been circling here for three weeks and is keeping ICARA animal rescue busy. Where the “bird of paradise” escaped from or who it belongs to has remained a mystery to animal rescue.

The peacock is repeatedly sighted by passers-by. Catching the bird turns out to be extremely difficult. “He’s just extremely shy,” says Lukas Riedl from the ICARA animal rescue service when asked by OÖN. The peacock is so shy that animal rescuers have so far not been able to approach it more than four to five meters. But the team has a glimmer of hope: “Maybe we can lock him up in a garage one day,” says Riedl. This would probably be the best chance to capture the animal. Of course, that would not solve the question of where the animal runaway comes from and who it belongs to. This question is still a mystery to animal rescuers.

Escaped animals keep animal rescue busy. About every second day the phone rings in the ICARA office when passers-by find an escaped animal. Usually these are less exotic “pets” like the peacock. It is often rabbits who have snuck away from their homes and are then found by pedestrians in urban areas.

By the way: The attempts to catch rabbits are usually crowned with similarly poor success as with that peacock that is currently hanging around in Urfahr. The animals are not only nimble, they are also capable of learning: After the first failed attempt at catching, the rabbits recognize the animal rescuers’ net from afar and flee from it, as Commander Riedl knows.

Not the first “exotic”

It is not the first time that an unusual animal contemporary makes a trip to the state capital: In May of last year, the Vietnamese pot-bellied pig “Guinness” was discovered and captured on a cycle path in the south of Linz.
