Esports: Blizzard announces the official end of the Overwatch League

Is the golden age of international Overwatch esports over for good or is there hope that it can return to the forefront?

Adyboo : if we talk about a golden age, it must be said that it was a pretty wonderful time. With the Blizzard Arena, it was cool the first seasons. Yes, it was cool when it was on Twitch. When we had to add the World Cup and when we commented on it in France at La Défense, where it was packed with people and where we had audience records, it was very cool too.

During this golden age, Overwatch was hyped and we recognized that the game was “not that bad”, obviously, I think that this golden age, we will never be able to find it again, given that it It was incredible hype. It was Blizzard’s new game, it was the GOTY [Game of The Year, jeu de l’année] 2016 was the arrival of a different esport, even if it was international and not very local.

We will never be able to touch this golden age with our fingertips.

On the other hand, it’s good that the Overwatch League no longer exists and that it can be reborn in another form with healthy foundations. Players need to tell themselves that they will start lower, play and get better as they go. It is important that scenes T2 and T3 [Tier 2 et Tier 3, des circuits esport moins professionnels] exist to make part of T1 shine. But if you feel that your roots are not stable, your tree will never grow properly.

This is what we hope with the revival of the OWL which will probably be called differently. We have rumors in the corridors which are not at all official, but, from the little I hear, the ESL is on the case.

It would be good if we could have a circuit that is really “low” where we start on what we call “tier 3” (T3): players who want to professionalize, who have a great level but who do not necessarily have a big structure behind them.

Then, these same players will earn enough to be able to move on to T2 which is the start of the real professional game with, why not, regional then European or intercontinental championships, and only then, they would arrive in T1 with real championships like what we can finally see it on LoL, Valorant or even R6.

And why not also get involved in student leagues? Each school or university could have its Overwatch team, and participate in tournaments. Then, this student side would transform into French Div2 which would lead, why not, to 100% French Overwatch, a bit like the LFL [la Ligue Française de League of Legends, ndlr] with this “up and down” system. We could have new generation contenders with the best European or EMEA teams [Europe, Middle East, Africa, nldr]to finally reach the level of the Worlds.
