Today, the Senate Health and Population Committee held a meeting chaired by Representative Dr. Ali Mahran, Chairman of the Committee, and in the presence of Representative Dr. Hussein Khudair, Undersecretary of the Committee, Representative Amr Hijab, Undersecretary of the Committee, and Representative Dr. Osama Fahim, Secretary of the Committee.
The meeting discussed the proposal submitted by Representative Dr. Moamen Moaz regarding “establishing a department for psychiatric diseases and addiction treatment in the New Valley Governorate.”
Representative Moamen Moaz, who submitted the proposal, said with desire that, given the increasing cases of mental illness and addiction in Egypt, and since New Valley Governorate is the only one that does not have any psychiatric or addiction treatment department, even though it is the most promising governorate that receives the attention of the political leadership in comprehensive and sustainable development. Since this type of disease has become more widespread, it must be addressed to preserve the health of citizens.
For his part, Dr. Ahmed Abdel Halim Mahrous, Director of the Health Directorate in the New Valley Governorate, confirmed that the New Valley Governorate is sprawling and has a population of 270 thousand people. Recently, attention has been paid to these places by sending medical convoys and equipping a mental health clinic for follow-up, but we do not have places to reserve cases, so it is possible He operated a clinic in Dakhla Hospital and another in Kharga and Farafra Hospital to deal with mental health and addiction patients until they could be detained.
Dr. Al-Sayed Khalil, Director of the Planning Department at the General Secretariat of Mental Health, said that we have a shortage of medical personnel at Assiut Hospital, knowing that the hospital does not accommodate many psychiatric cases and they have no objection to providing any requirements for construction, as well as any needs or equipment needed by any department or hospital. To treat addiction and mental health in the New Valley Governorate, noting that the psychiatric patient requires a long stay in psychiatric hospitals, and that they must have large green spaces in accordance with the requirements.
Dr. Ali Mahran, head of the committee, proposed two solutions to quickly solve the problem of treating patients. One of them is to be implemented in the short term, which is to provide a clinic to treat psychological diseases and addiction and seek the help of specialist doctors to treat psychiatric diseases from the New Valley University Faculty of Medicine. The other, in the long term, is to establish a university hospital affiliated with New Valley College of Medicine, providing a ward for the treatment of mental illness and addiction.
At the end of the meeting, the committee recommended providing a resident doctor to operate the mental health and addiction treatment clinic on an ongoing basis at Kharga General Hospital.
Providing the committee with the operating plan for all New Valley centers (Kharga – Dakhla – Farafra) affiliated with the General Secretariat of Mental Health and the extent of their readiness and coverage with doctors from Assiut University Hospital.
