Ethiopia’s Gotetum Gebreselassie won the women’s marathon gold medal on Monday, with a new world record time in athletics, by finishing the race in 2 hours 18 minutes 11 seconds.

Gebrselassie was nine seconds ahead of Kenya’s Judith Geptum Kurier, who had led most of the race, but was unable to stop her Ethiopian rival’s attack with less than two kilometers to go.

Israeli Luna Shimtai Salpeter won the bronze medal in two hours 20 minutes and 18 seconds, exceeding the previous world record time, set by Britain’s Paula Radcliffe in Helsinki in 2005, when she finished the marathon in two hours 20 minutes and 57 seconds.

Kenya’s Mary Jepkosgei Keitani has held the world record since 2017, when she finished the marathon in two hours, 17 minutes and one second.

Kenyan Ruth Chipengtech, the defending champion, who was a contender for gold in the current edition of the world championships, exited the marathon on Monday after nearly half the distance.
