EU countries: Russian passports from occupied territories not valid

The EU states do not want to recognize Russian passports that have been issued in occupied areas of Ukraine. The permanent representatives of the 27 EU states made a corresponding decision today in Brussels. The same should therefore apply to the breakaway republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in Georgia.

“We will never condone the violation of Ukraine’s and Georgia’s fundamental rights to independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity,” said Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan on behalf of the current EU Presidency.

The EU Commission proposed the procedure at the beginning of September. The authority made it clear that almost all states were already acting in this way. According to the authority, the proposal should ensure a uniform approach. Next, the EU states must now agree on a position with the European Parliament.
