The European Parliament is suing the EU Commission over the controversial release of funding for Hungary. The dpa news agency learned this on Thursday from a meeting between Parliament President Roberta Metsola and the chairmen of the parliamentary groups in Strasbourg. On Tuesday, Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee voted almost unanimously – with 16 yes votes and one no vote – in favor of the lawsuit.

Parliament had previously expressed “serious concerns” about the Commission’s decision in December to release 10.2 billion euros to Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government. Critics suspected a deal to persuade Orban to lift his veto against 50 billion euros in EU aid for Ukraine. At the December summit, he maintained his blockade, and Orban only gave in at a special summit on February 1st.

The EU froze funding for Hungary in the long-standing dispute over deficiencies in the rule of law. The EU Commission justified the release with a judicial reform in Hungary. From Parliament’s point of view, this only eliminates the grievances on paper.
