EU ready for war with Russia. “Emergency program in case of attack” –

Europe is facing a moment of extreme tension and war preparation. Previously, some European leaders together with the High Representative of the European Union, Josep Borrell, had launched an urgent appeal in this sense. But now an even firmer decision is being made. Proof of this is the draft document that should be approved at the current European Council, which even includes an emergency plan for a possible war attack. The imperative need to develop a joint military and civilian plan to address crises in the context of growing threats is underlined. This is not an error, but rather a clear invitation placed in the military section of the document.

The European Union, Repubblica reveals, feels the threat of the conflict in Ukraine is ever closer, so much so that it is considering the possibility that it could extend beyond the borders of the EU. The tension is evident and Borrell’s Latin call “si vis pacem, para bellum” resonates loudly. Although some countries, including Italy, express doubts about the centrality of national defense, the presence of this invitation denotes a clear increase in tension and alarm over Russian threats.

Much of the European summit will be dedicated to discussing how to strengthen the Union’s defenses, with the addition of new public debt to finance the military sector in view of a possible war. Despite the doubts of some member states, this possibility will be explicitly discussed, also opening the door to Eurobonds. Another crucial issue will be that of defense financing, with proposals including using the proceeds of Russian assets frozen in Europe to strengthen the European Peace Facility, the fund used to supply weapons to Kiev. Problems arise linked to the resistance of some countries, such as Orbán’s Hungary and “neutral” ones such as Malta, Austria and Ireland. The Council will also discuss countermeasures to avoid evasion of economic sanctions against Russia, with the hypothesis of tariffs on Russian agricultural products that could involve Italy, although these measures could be included in a package of benefits for farmers.
