EU Sanctions Imposed on Guatemala: Restrictions on Officials Undermining Democracy

The Council today decided to impose restrictions on five individuals for acts that undermine democracy, the rule of law or the peaceful transfer of power in Guatemala.

Items include: Attorney General of GuatemalaMaria Consuelo Porras Argueta de Porres and Three other officials in the Guatemalan prosecutor’s office – Secretary-General Ángel Arnoldo Pineda Ávila, head of the Office of the Special Anti-Impunity Prosecutor José Rafael Curruchiche Cucul and prosecutor Leonor Eugenia Morales Lazo De Sánchez – and Judge Fredy Raúl Orellana Letona.

Those goals serve to undermine democracy, the rule of law, and the peaceful transfer of power in Guatemala.

The listed persons are subject to seizing assetsAnd so do EU citizens and companies. It is forbidden to raise funds for them.. That person is still under travel restrictionsThis prevents them from entering or passing through EU territory.

Today’s decision follows the adoption on 12 January 2024 of a Specific framework for restrictive measures To support democracy and the peaceful and orderly transfer of power in Guatemala. The framework was adopted before President Bernardo’s inauguration. Arevalo was democratically elected on January 14, 1481, with High Representative Josep Borrell joining.
