[이코노미스트 이창훈 기자] While the Chinese government completely allowed its citizens to take group tours to Korea for the first time in six years and five months, July’s air passengers recorded the highest monthly figure this year. In particular, during the month of July, the number of air passengers using Chinese routes increased 26 times compared to July of last year, indicating that the Chinese routes that have been stopped are rapidly recovering.
According to the aviation statistics of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on the 15th, the number of air passengers using national airlines and foreign airlines last month was 8,977,651, a 79% increase from last July (5,014,000). This is 83.8% of the level in July 2019, before the Corona 19 crisis. It is interpreted that it has recovered to the extent that it is close to the air passengers before the Corona 19 crisis.
Among air passengers in July, the number of passengers who used international flights was 6,383,000, a three-fold increase from last July (1,844,000). However, the number of passengers who took domestic flights during the same period was only 2,594,000, down 18% from July last year (3,169,000).
In July, the number of air passengers using Chinese routes also increased sharply. During the month of July, the number of air passengers using Chinese routes was 818,000, an increase of more than 26 times compared to the same period last year. As Chinese group tours to Korea resumed this month, it is a view inside and outside the airline industry that the speed of recovery of Chinese routes will accelerate.
In particular, it is expected that air passenger demand will continue to increase as the summer peak season approaches. According to Incheon International Airport Corporation, the number of air passengers who used Incheon International Airport from July 25 to August 15 was 86% of the same period in 2019.
