by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

The 2025 FIBA EuroBasket tournament delivered a significant economic boost to its host cities – Katowice, Limassol, Tampere, and Riga – exceeding the impact of the 2022 edition and setting a latest benchmark for the competition. A recently released Host City Impact Study, conducted by Nielsen Sports in collaboration with FIBA, reveals a total monetary impact of €283.6 million, factoring in economic, media, and social benefits while accounting for environmental impact.

The success of EuroBasket 2025 underscores the growing value of international sporting events as catalysts for economic growth and urban development. The study highlights not only the immediate financial gains for the host cities but also the lasting positive effects on tourism, infrastructure, and community engagement. This latest report provides valuable insights for future event organizers and host city planners seeking to maximize the benefits of large-scale sporting competitions.

The economic impact of the tournament reached €218.9 million, with €58.4 million directly attributable to spending by fans, spectators, organizers, and accredited attendees. The remaining portion stemmed from indirect and induced economic effects within the host cities. Notably, over one-third – 445,909 – of the total visitors originated from outside the host countries, injecting fresh revenue into local economies. Riga, serving as the primary venue for group stage games and the Final Phase, experienced the largest economic benefit at €120.6 million. Tampere followed with €55.4 million, while Limassol and Katowice generated €25.9 million and €17 million respectively, according to the FIBA report.

Beyond the direct economic gains, the tournament significantly enhanced media visibility for the host cities. The Media Value, encompassing television broadcasts, online coverage, and social media engagement, increased by 61% compared to the 2022 tournament, reaching €63.1 million. Cumulative audiences more than doubled to 647 million viewers (up from 303 million in 2022), with Germany, Poland, and Greece showing the largest viewership numbers. Social media impressions also surged to 164 million, a substantial increase from the 99 million recorded in 2022.

Social Impact and Volunteer Engagement

The positive effects of EuroBasket 2025 extended beyond economic and media gains, with a calculated social impact of €2.1 million. This impact was primarily driven by increased levels of physical activity and the upskilling of volunteers. Tampere emerged as the leading beneficiary realizing the largest share of both social city value (€613,000) and increased human capital (€204,000). The Nielsen Sports methodology relied on primary research data gathered through on-site surveys, cross-media monitoring, and evaluation, drawing upon expertise from over 150 previous Host City Impact studies, as well as internal FIBA data.

Interestingly, surveys revealed high levels of visitor satisfaction, with 90% of international visitors indicating they would recommend the host city to friends, and 89% expressing a likelihood of returning for future visits. This positive feedback underscores the potential for EuroBasket to serve as a long-term driver of tourism and economic growth for the host cities.
