Europa League Conference: Cédric Bakambu scorer, Betis eliminated

Last updated Feb 23, 2024

Defeated at home in the first leg, Cédric Bakambu and Real Betis failed to come back from behind to qualify for the Europa Conference League. Despite the Congolese’s opening score, the Verdiblancos were behind (1-1), synonymous with elimination in the play-offs.

Starting for the first time since his arrival at the Sevillian club, Cédric Bakambu opened the scoring in the 38th minute (1-0). On a serve from Aitor Rubial, the former Galatasaray striker scored a goal for which he holds the secret, before repeating his famous celebration (in tribute to the victims of the East). Real Betis had done the hardest part until the break. In the second period, the Congolese striker gave way to Willian Jose. The Croats equalized just before the hour mark through Kaneko.

Tell the wall, the Spanish club was no longer able to score until the last whistle from the referee. Disillusionment for Cédric Bakambu and his friends for whom the European adventure ends at this stage of the competition. Recruited last winter, Bakambu started his goal tally with the Andalusian club. He still has the season to finish in La Liga where Betis will compete for European places until the end.
