As tensions escalate in the Middle East following recent strikes on Iran, European nations are bolstering their preparedness for potential mass evacuations of citizens. Ten Northern European countries have agreed to develop coordinated plans for cross-border evacuations in the event of a wider conflict or crisis, signaling a heightened level of concern over regional instability. This collaborative effort comes as several nations scramble to assist their citizens seeking to depart the region.
The agreement, reached between Sweden, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Denmark, aims to streamline the process of protecting civilians in the Nordic and Baltic regions during worst-case scenarios. According to Sweden’s defence ministry, the plans are informed by lessons learned from the war in Ukraine, where the large-scale movement of populations became a critical aspect of maintaining national defense. “Experience from Ukraine has shown that temporary movements of the population enable the continued defence of the country while protecting civilians,” the ministry stated.
Beyond large-scale evacuation planning, some European countries are advising citizens to take personal preparedness measures. In Sweden, the national bank, Riksbank, is now recommending that all adults maintain a supply of cash – at least 1000 Swedish kronor (approximately £81.41 as of March 5, 2026) – to cover essential expenses like food and medicine in the event of disruptions to banking systems or other crises, including war. The bank also suggests holding cash in multiple currencies and having access to alternative payment methods. “Having access to different payment methods improves the public’s ability to develop payments in the event of temporary disruptions, crises and in the worst case, war,” the bank explained.
The coordinated crisis plans will address key logistical challenges associated with mass evacuations, including housing for evacuees, registration procedures, transportation routes, and specialized care for vulnerable individuals. The urgency of these preparations is underscored by the ongoing efforts to extract citizens from the Middle East. Germany has already assisted 600 citizens in leaving the region, with another 250 evacuated with government support and further flights planned, according to government reports. Italy has repatriated 317 citizens via charter flights, and Spain has brought 171 of its nationals home.
The United Kingdom is also working to evacuate its citizens, though initial efforts faced setbacks. The first chartered flight from Oman was delayed due to “operational reasons,” but Home Office minister Alex Norris stated that the flight is expected to depart today, with additional flights to follow. “We expect that to be leaving today, we expect there to be multiple more flights following that,” Norris told Mornings with Ridge and Frost.
These evacuation efforts follow a period of heightened tension sparked by recent strikes in the region.
