The bad weather this summer is disrupting air traffic. The bad weather, mainly thunderstorms, which hit Europe in July led to an increase in aircraft delays on the continent, announced on Tuesday Eurocontrolthe European air traffic monitoring body.
These delays due to bad weather were multiplied by 2.5 last month compared to July 2022. “The main impact comes from convective storms, such as thunderstorms in particular in Germany, Hungary and Serbia”, according to the organization bringing together 41 countries on the continent. These stormy masses, charged with electricity and conducive to strong winds, can lead pilots to deviate from their planned trajectory, causing delays.

In total, the delay per flight increased by 6% in July. If we exclude the disturbances caused by storms, it has however fallen by 23%, notes Eurocontrol.
Last summer, the resumption of air traffic in Europe had been the source of significant delays, many companies and airports not being ready to welcome the increase in passengers following the pandemic.
Despite the delays, the number of European flights exceeded one million for the first time since September 2019, before the pandemic. A total of 1,019,000 take-offs and landings were made in Europe, 7% more than in July 2022.
