Bern, 23.06.2023 – Federal Councilor Guy Parmelin will take part in the Ministerial Conference of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) in Liechtenstein on June 27, 2023. In particular, the outlook for the free trade policy of the EFTA States will be discussed. Furthermore, the free trade agreement with Moldova will be signed on the sidelines of the ministerial conference.
The ministerial conference will take place in Schaan, Liechtenstein, at the invitation of the President of the EFTA Council, Dominique Hasler, Liechtenstein Minister for Foreign Affairs, Education and Sport. The Icelandic and Liechtenstein Ministers as well as the Norwegian State Secretary and Federal Councilor Guy Parmelin will discuss the work in progress and the prospects for the free trade policy of the EFTA States. The Ministerial Conference will also address relations between the EFTA States and their respective relations with the European Union.
The wide-ranging free trade agreement with Moldova will be signed on the sidelines of the ministerial conference. It is in line with Swiss policy aimed at supporting economic reforms in Moldova and integrating the country into the structures of economic cooperation at European and world level. It opens wide access to the Moldovan market for Switzerland and the other EFTA States, improves the legal framework and increases predictability for economic actors.
EFTA and Ukraine will also launch the process of modernizing their free trade agreement, in force since 2012, during a virtual meeting.
EFTA ministers will also meet with Singapore’s trade minister on ongoing negotiations for a digital economy deal.
Ministers will also hold an exchange of views on the main agenda items with the Parliamentary Committee and the EFTA Advisory Committee.
