Gustav Klimt’s ‘Lady with a Fan’ bought at Sotheby’s for $108.4m (£74m) informs June 27 RIA Novosti. Thus, a European price record has been set in London.
“Lady with a Fan” is the last portrait of a lady and, in general, supposedly the last “almost finished” painting by Gustav Klimt. The Austrian artist grew up in poverty, his sister recalled that by Christmas they not only had no gifts, but there was not always bread on the table.
Interestingly, “Lady with a Fan” set record before the start of trading. The painting was exhibited at Sotheby’s with an estimate of $80 million. Experts noted that this is the highest initial estimate at European auctions. The head of Sotheby’s, Helen Newman, reported that, unlike many of Klimt’s other works, this painting was not painted to order, but probably for himself.
