Støre refers to Joe Biden as one of America’s most prominent politicians over several decades, and a president who has carried out several important reforms.
– I especially want to praise him for his leadership in NATO and look forward to working with Biden as US president until the end of January next year, says Støre.
He points out that there is respect for the decision to put the country before oneself, as Biden justifies the decision to withdraw as a presidential candidate.
– Close cooperation
German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz says Joe Biden in his presidency has achieved a lot for his own country, for Europe and for the world.
– Thanks to him, the cooperation across the Atlantic is close, Nato is strong and the USA is a good and reliable partner for us. His decision not to run once more deserves respect, says Scholz.
The newly elected British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, also mentions respect for the decision as important – but that he looks forward to working together for the rest of the period.
– As President Biden has done throughout his career, I know that this decision has also been made in the interest of the American people, Starmer points out.
– Perhaps the most difficult decision
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who was EU president from 2014 to 2019, says this must have been a difficult day for Biden.
– You have often made difficult decisions that have made Poland, America and the world safer, and democracy and freedom stronger. I know that you were guided by the same principles when you announced this decision. Perhaps the hardest of your life, Tusk announced on X.
From Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Biden also gets the best shots. He credits Biden’s leadership with the fact that the United States got through both economic crises and the pandemic, as well as the serious attack on Capitol Hill.
– The US has been a role model when it comes to support for Ukraine through Putin’s aggression once morest the country, he points out.
The Kremlin is watching closely
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also has a comment on Biden’s announcement to withdraw as the Democratic presidential candidate:
– The election is still four months away. It’s a long time, and a lot can change. We must be patient and pay close attention. Our first priority is the military special operation, says Peskov, referring to the war in Ukraine.
