Wherever Diana Heller appears, the corpses are apparently not far away. In the last part of Eva Reichl’s thriller trilogy “Lügendorf”, the clever health food store saleswoman with a penchant for crime investigation gets involved in a murder case that happened 14 years ago, becomes a suspect herself and experiences her personal horror trip in her Mühlviertler home village.
After the death of her husband Oliver and a rape, the 30-year-old found peace in her house, which she is currently renovating. But then a skeleton is found near a stream. It is Stefanie Sipenthaler, who was apparently beaten to death 14 years ago at the age of 16. At that time, everyone in the village believed she had run away. Diana’s friend Nora, Steffi’s best friend at the time, comes under suspicion. Both of them made a certain Robert look nice, and as Steffi’s diary shows, there was a heated argument shortly before the murder. But Diana is also among the suspects because she was part of the clique and also had an argument with the murder victim. Now the two of them try to find the murderer and find themselves in more and more danger.
The narrowness in the Mühlviertler village
Eva Reichl has found her tone in “Lügendorf”. The author, who is also known for her Mühlviertel crime novels about Oskar Stern, stringently tells the twist-filled criminal case. She cleverly leads the reader on the wrong track again and again as events come to a head. However, it is not very credible that a 16-year-old is murdered in her home village and no one asks more detailed questions. The way the Mühlviertel author creates an atmosphere of fear sometimes seems banal, for example when the eerie noises in the house only come from the cat. Eva Reichl, on the other hand, describes the narrowness of the Mühlviertler village in a very understandable way, and she makes the final showdown really exciting. Overall, “Lügendorf” is a thriller that is difficult to put down.
