Artificial intelligence (AI) technology that can recognize and reproduce facial expressions has been developed. Using this technology, humanoid robots will be able to express various emotions just like humans. It is also possible to depict more realistic facial expressions in animations and the like.

US IT media Tech Crunchreported on the 29th that a research team at Cornell University has developed an earable device that can read facial expressions by interpreting facial data measured using a sonar with AI.

The earring developed by Cornell University is a bulky headphone-shaped device. When the speaker sends an acoustic signal to the side of the face, the microphone detects microscopic echoes generated by facial features, including eyes, nose and mouth. With this ‘echo profile’, you can capture and capture movements such as moving your eyebrows or blinking your eyes.

However, there are parts that need to be processed by connecting to a smartphone, and the battery life is limited to 3 hours. In addition, the echo transformation AI algorithm used in the system must learn face data in advance for 32 minutes before it can start to recognize facial expressions.

“It will one day be used to create animations for humanoid robots,” the research team explained.
