With the theme “Climate Change: Challenges and the role of Insurance”, Interamerican held an important event on Tuesday, February 13 in Karditsa, with the participation of representatives of the State, local government, agencies of the wider region, partners, insurance consultants and customers.
Opening the event, the CEO of Interamerican, Yannis Kantoros, referred to the new data created by the intensifying effects of climate change and the new role that the insurance industry is called upon to play. He briefly mentioned Interamerican’s strategic choice to take the lead in informing, raising awareness, preparing and supporting society in how to deal with severe weather phenomena, utilizing modern technologies, partnerships, the infrastructure and insurance solutions available to the group.

The guest and keynote speaker of the event was the Director of Research of the National Observatory of Athens, Konstantinos Lagouvardos, who analyzed the phenomenon of climate change and its impact, through the frequent and intensifying natural disasters that take place on a global and local level. Special mention was also made of the bad weather Daniel and its characteristics, which hit the wider region of Thessaly with particular severity. He characteristically mentioned that “Within two days, the total amount of rainwater that fell in the area is equivalent to the amount of water that Athens would consume in 14 years!”

The General Director of Insurance Operations of Interamerican, Panos Kouvalis, presented Interamerican’s mechanism for dealing with the most frequent natural disasters, emphasizing the process of immediate compensation (fast track) for customers (individuals and businesses), the readiness and immediate activation of all infrastructure and of the Group’s Immediate Assistance services, as well as in the important collaboration of the Interamerican Group with the Athens Observatory for the joint development of predictive models, which will be used for the preparation, information and effective management of extreme weather phenomena.

Georgia Paraschou, founder of Humanity Greece, referred extensively to the organization’s strategic collaboration with Interamerican, for the development of the appropriate infrastructure (Call Center 24/7, operational systems, etc.), as well as the immediate joint organization of humanitarian missions to support citizens affected by the occurrence of any extreme weather phenomenon.
At the end of the event, the General Director of Interamerican Aid, Giorgos Spantidakis, referred to the critical role of the people of the Immediate Aid, who contributed to the maximum in the relief of the people of Thessaly, both insured, and the local society in general, awarding the heads of the groups.

Taking into account the serious damages caused to the infrastructure of the region by the weather phenomena, Interamerican announced the donation of a significant amount to the General Hospital of Karditsa, actively contributing to the restoration of the damages caused during the bad weather Daniel, in the surgical unit of the hospital. The donation was received by Mr. Yiannis Kantoros, Managing Director of Interamerican, Mrs. Mary Koutsioupa, Director of the General Hospital of Karditsa.
