Robert Pattinson puts on the costume of the masked vigilante of Gotham, walking in the footsteps of Michael Keaton or Christian Bale. In the cast, we also find Zoë Kravitz (Catwoman), Colin Farrell (The Penguin), Andy Serkis (Alfred) or Paul Dano (The Riddler). The Batman is a film directed by Matt Reeves, to whom we owe the last two episodes of The Planet of the Apes. The filmmaker has chosen to explore the detective talents of Bruce Wayne and offers a sticky, violent and ultra-realistic thriller, in line with the last film Joker.
If the Batman film is accessible for all audiences, it is perhaps not recommended to see it with children under 12 years old. After 2h50 of film however, do not expect to discover a post-credits scene either. This does not mean that no sequel is to be expected, since the end of the film itself opens up new horizons for the incarnation proposed by Robert Pattinson. Matt Reeves has also confided to have discussed with Warner Bros of projects related to the film. But for now, no sequel has been officially announced for The Batman.

Synopsis – It’s been two years since Bruce Wayne donned the Batman costume and fought crime in Gotham. When a killer goes after the city’s elite, disseminating clues for the masked vigilante, Batman discovers what’s really going on in Gotham. To unmask the culprit of these sadistic crimes, he will join forces with Selina Kyle (Catwoman).
The Batman is much darker, more radical and violent than previous films featuring the masked vigilante. In the United States, the film is rated “PG-13”, meaning that parental guidance is recommended and some films may not be suitable for children under 13. In France, there is no ban, the film having been broken “all audiences with warning”. But, due to some violent scenes and a plot related to a serial killer, it is probably recommended not to take young people under the age of 13 to see The Batman unaccompanied.
The Marvel stable of superhero films have accustomed viewers to waiting until the very end of the credits to discover the famous post-credits scenes. The spectators of The Batman won’t have to bother, since there is no post-credits scene that concludes Matt Reeves’ film. However, there is an easter egg (or wink) in reference to a scene from the film which gives a web address: that of rataladaessential for the plot of the film and which Warner recreated to promote his feature film.
The Joker is Batman’s inseparable villain, often managing to upstage the masked vigilante. The proof in The Dark Knight or the film dedicated to the super-villain, Joker with Joaquin Phoenix. Fans therefore often wait to find the clown in the adventures of the batman. But what about in The Batman ? Before the release of the film, the Joker is not mentioned as one of the villains who will cross paths with the protagonist played by Robert Pattinson. We know for the moment that he will face the Riddler (Paul Dano), the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) or even Carmine Falcone (John Turturro). Amid this array of villains, there seems to be little room left for the Joker.
Warning, the rest of this paragraph contains spoilers on The Batman. After seeing The Batman, does the Joker appear in the film? If his name is not spoken at any point, a prisoner in Arkham Prison seems to fit the character description. This one appears, in the shadows, at the very end of the film, evoking in his speech to the Riddler the word “clown” in particular. His meaningful laugh leaves little room for doubt. This appearance can be perceived both as a nod to the mythical character of the comics, but also suggest that in the event of a continuation of The Batman, we will find the Joker. This mysterious prisoner of Arkham is mentioned in the end credits, and we discover that he is played by Barry Keoghan (The Eternals, Dunkirk, Killing of the sacred deer…). The actor was indeed announced in the casting of the film on IMDB, but he was credited under the name of “Officer Stanley”.
The Batman will he be entitled to a sequel to the cinema? For the time being, nothing has been formalized or confirmed, since the results of the film at the box office will most likely impact the final decision of Warner Bros. But at the London premiere, director Matt Reeves confirmed that a second installment of The Batman was in discussion, even if nothing has been ordered yet: “for sure, it’s on the table! Because let’s be honest, we don’t do number 1 thinking that there will be a number 2. We do a movie that stands on its own, but we’re rocking getting closer to that idea, obviously…I really believe in what we’ve done and I’d love to tell more stories with this Batman. tell more stories on stream, as we develop stuff for HBO Max.” Indeed, a series featuring the Penguin played by Colin Farrell is in preparation. For his part, Robert Pattinson confided to Empire that he “would love” to make two other films, having reflected on the psychological evolution of Bruce Wayne.
Before the release of Matt Reeves’ film this Wednesday, March 2, 2022, the first press reviews have been published. And they have something to reassure the most skeptical spectators. The Batman garners 87% positive reviews on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. On Allociné, the feature film receives a rating of 3.8/5 stars. the specialized magazine Cinemateaser is one of the conquered, judging that “Matt Reeves seizes the Batman icon in a sweeping and imposing move”, “anchored in a solid plot but firmly driven by the emotions of its characters”.
Le Figaro salutes “a dark and sticky version of Batman”, while The Parisian judges this “dark return to basics, voluntarily tinkered on the visual level, is very successful”. Robert Pattinson’s acting performance is praised by Closer, who believes that the British actor “delivers a stunning performance”. more mixed, First believes that this thriller is “an undeniable success of incarnation and aesthetics”, deploring however “a scenario which struggles to rise to the same level”. The JDD salutes for its part “a violence, a brutality and a cruelty worthy of the thrillers of the 1970s, despite an action ultimately quite static which does not avoid lengths”. Fans should definitely be wowed by this new cinematic take on The Batman.
The Batman by Matt Reeves had already taken advantage of the DC Fandome event at the end of August 2020 to unveil a first video teaser. We discovered a younger Bruce Wayne than those to whom the cinema has accustomed us. He seems to be struggling with the Riddler, played by Paul Dano. Robert Pattinson dons the Batman cape and becomes the new incarnation of Batman on the big screen. But should we have seen other films from the DC universe or other films featuring the superhero before discovering the realization of Matt Reeves? Fortunately not, since The Batman is a new vigilante solo film. Who says new incarnation, says plot completely independent of the films of Tim Burton, Joel Schumacher or even Christopher Nolan.
