Evgeny Kissin and Valery Gergiev: A Tale of Two Russian Artists in the West

2024-02-02 14:47:00

It’s been a while since two young Russian stars first caused a sensation together in the West: 36 years ago, Evgeny Kissin, then the pianist prodigy of the moment, and the aspiring conductor Valery Gergiev enchanted the London audience. Today, a reunion between the two artists seems as unlikely as a polar bear and a penguin meeting in the wild: Russia’s attack on Ukraine has divided the two. Gergiev? He lost all his positions in the West because of his silence on Putin’s war of aggression, but rose to become a kind of classical emperor between Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Kissin, on the other hand, has long lived in the West and has become a sharp-tongued critic of Putin – and has therefore become persona non grata in his home country.
