On Aug. 10, 2026, a 56-year-old cleaner named Osman Sidin intervened to disarm a 34-year-old man who was allegedly inflicting self-harm with a knife outside Clementi Mall in Singapore, according to reporting by The Straits Times. An Unexpected Interruption Outside Clementi Mall
For Osman Sidin and his wife, what initially sounded like an outdoor concert on a Monday afternoon quickly turned into a high-stakes crisis. At about 12:15 p.m. on Aug. 10, the couple was walking near Clementi Mall when they heard shouts echoing through the area, as reported by STOMP. Sidin quickly realized the gravity of the situation when he heard people screaming for others to run.
Without hesitation, Sidin handed his belongings—including his inseparable guitar—to his wife and rushed toward the commotion. A 34-year-old man was actively stabbing himself with a weapon that resembled a durian chopper. Sidin acted immediately to prevent any harm to the crowds of shoppers and children fleeing the scene, telling The Straits Times, “There were so many people running, including kids, I didn’t want him to hurt them.”
Martial Arts Training and a Bloodied Rescue
Sidin relied on skills he acquired decades ago during a stint in prison, where he first picked up martial arts. While he declined to elaborate on his past offenses, he stated clearly that his training allowed him to safely tackle the armed individual and neutralize the immediate threat.
During the struggle, Sidin managed to pin the man to the ground. The weapon fell some distance away, though Sidin sustained an injury to his right wrist and found his shirt completely soaked in blood from the man’s self-inflicted wounds. “The man immediately said sorry to me, but by then, my shirt was all bloodied because he stabbed himself,” Sidin recounted to STOMP. Amid the chaos, he shouted for bystanders to push the dropped weapon away.
Singapore Police Force officers received a call for assistance at Block 441B Clementi Avenue 3 at approximately 12:20 p.m. Paramedics subsequently conveyed the 34-year-old man to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Community Support and a Return to Work Despite Injury
Following the incident, Sidin received medical treatment at the hospital and was granted medical leave. However, facing financial pressures as a daily-wage cleaner living in a rental flat while awaiting a Housing Board flat, he decided to return to work the very next day. His wife, who supported his decision to intervene, expressed pride in his actions while voicing a desire for him to properly rest and recover.
The local community quickly rallied around the couple. Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC Member of Parliament David Hoe praised the intervention, noting on Facebook that stepping forward when help is needed highlights the strength of neighborhood ties. On the evening of Aug. 11, Hoe and a grassroots volunteer visited Sidin to present him with cash contributions collected from 22 local residents. According to STOMP, Hoe stated, “This is our way of saying thanks and supporting Osman and his wife,” adding that his team would arrange a medical follow-up for Sidin’s injured wrist.
Giving Back and Redefining a Personal Journey
For Sidin, who regularly carries his guitar and actively engages in charity work with Jamiyah Singapore, the intervention felt like a natural extension of his ongoing efforts to make amends for his past. As a participant in the Yellow Ribbon Singapore community, which supports ex-offenders in reintegrating into society, he views his community contributions as a form of payback.
“This also feels like my payback time,” Sidin shared, emphasizing that he sought no personal glory or praise for his actions. Having spent years turning his life around after what he described as doing “a lot of bad stuff” in his youth, Sidin’s decisive actions outside Clementi Mall underscore a profound commitment to protecting his community.
