Arizona State University (ASU), considered one of the most innovative universities in the United States, has decided to fully utilize ChatGPT in university education in collaboration with OpenAI. This is the first time in the United States that ChatGPT is being introduced at the university level. In some states, such as New York, the use of ChatGPT in the curriculum is completely banned, so attention is focused on whether the ‘ASU experiment’ will be successful.

ASU announced on the 18th that it has formed a partnership with OpenAI and will utilize ‘ChatGPT Enterprise’ at the university level. This is the first time that OpenAI has partnered with a university rather than a company.

ASU plans to use generative AI not only for education but also for improving research capabilities and strengthening personal information protection and security by introducing ‘ChatGPT Enterprise’.

ChatGPT Enterprise, launched in August of last year, is a service for corporate customers with no usage restrictions, and its performance is up to two times faster than GPT-4 Plus, a paid service for individuals.

Starting in February, ASU will be holding an idea contest to utilize ‘Corporate ChatGPT’ in which faculty and staff will participate. There are three areas for application: improving student performance, research innovation, and streamlining organizational tasks.

“Our faculty and staff were already using ChatGPT and artificial intelligence tools before we introduced ChatGPT Enterprise at the university level,” said ASU Chief Information Officer Lev Gonick. “We have been preparing for this partnership for more than six months.” . The school added that ChatGPT Enterprise adopts enterprise-grade security measures to provide a safe user environment without privacy concerns.

ASU also plans to build a customized ‘AI tutor’ for students through a partnership with OpenAI. It is like a personal professor who teaches according to my ability. CIO Gornick said, “STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects are subjects that determine success or failure in many higher education,” and explained that AI cooperation will be concentrated in this field. Additionally, ChatGPT is scheduled to be introduced in the ‘Writing for Freshmen’ class, which is the most enrolled class at ASU.

ASU also uses ChatGPT Enterprise to develop AI avatars such as ‘creative friends’ that study specific subjects.

ChatGPT enterprise accounts can only be used as faculty, staff, and researcher accounts and cannot be used as student accounts. Faculty, staff, and researchers seeking access must submit a separate proposal starting in February.

It is rare for a university to openly accept AI technology like Arizona State University. ASU is developing its own AI infrastructure by launching the ‘AI Acceleration’ team in August of last year. We formed a team of 15 people, including machine learning operations (MLOps) engineers, data scientists, and AI development engineers.

ASU has been ranked #1 in the U.S. News & World Report rankings as the ‘most innovative university’ for seven consecutive years since 2016. President Michael Crow has been leading the university’s innovation while serving as president of ASU for 20 years since 2002.

ASU significantly increased the number of students by opening the university to online education programs. In addition, we developed a personalized education program in cooperation with an edutech company. The department was reorganized to focus on social issues and future tasks rather than focusing on existing departments.

By raising funds by operating various industry-university cooperation programs with companies, the university, which was 90% funded by state government subsidies in 2002, has now reduced its dependence to 9%.

“We want to learn a lot from ASU and expand the use of ChatGPT at higher education institutions,” OpenAI Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap said in a press release.

As confusion ensued at the beginning of the introduction of ChatGPT, many educational institutions banned its use. The New York City Department of Education banned the use of ChatGPT in all public high schools in early January last year, and also blocked the use of ChatGPT in some public high schools in Seattle.

Oxford and Cambridge universities in the UK also banned ChatGPT. This is due to concerns that ChatGPT will destroy writing education by writing on behalf of students. There is still a heated debate over whether there is a problem with using generative AI such as ChatGPT in the paper writing process. In China, there were even claims that college students who wrote papers using generative AI should have their degrees revoked.
