Exclusive Access Hours at Plopsaqua in Hannut: Exploring Discrimination and Preferential Rates

They don’t come to play in the slides or have fun in the wave pool, but to do lengths in the swimming pool. But this Wednesday morning, they were refused entry to the Plopsaqua in Hannut. However, the pool is usually accessible to swimmers from 8 a.m. before the opening of the entire site at 10 a.m. But apparently not for everyone.

On Facebook, a Braivois, yet used to the site and who has a swimmer’s subscription, recounted his misadventure. The water park staff refused him entry before 10 a.m. because he is not a citizen of Hannut or Landen. “Discrimination for prices is still happening, but discrimination for access hours is ridiculous, rebels the Braivois. Where is the logic when there is a low attendance anyway at the opening?

Information taken from the Plopsa group, there is indeed a regulation which, in addition to the preferential rates, allows Hannutois and the inhabitants of Landen to come and swim before everyone else. “It’s not new, says Sofie Loy, from the press service of the Plopsa group. This has always been the case. You should know that certain hours are also reserved for swimming clubs and schools which have members who do not necessarily live in one of the two municipalities…”

“I have been swimming 2 to 3 times a week for two years, the Braivois is astonished. But I was only informed today (Editor’s note: this Wednesday) for the very first time…”

On the side of the Commune of Hannut, we hope to clarify this matter soon. “I saw that we were talking about it on social networks, indicates the mayor of Hannut, Manu Douette. We have our consultation meeting with Plopsa on September 1, we will ask the question.

To replace communal swimming pools

As a reminder, the aquatic center was created following an agreement between the Municipalities of Landen and Hannut, in particular to replace the aging communal swimming pools. The two cities pay one million euros annually to Plopsa to be able to use the swimming pool for their schools, the local clubs and their inhabitants who come to swim there. For all these categories, preferential rates are applied. And longer hours too, to avoid crowds with tourists.

“Maybe this regulation existed, but there was no control until there were too many swimmers”, considers the mayor who does not see a problem if other “foreign” swimmers come from 8 a.m., if there are not too many people. “But if this is not the case, it is normal that it is then reserved for Hannutois and the inhabitants of Landen.
