Dylan and his father are distraught. Last September, they received a gas and electricity regularization bill amounting to 18,881.06 euros compared to 486 euros last year. A complaint was filed with the energy mediation service and contact was made with Test-Achats to request a reaction from the company, which appears not to react.
“We pay a monthly deposit of 735 euros per month, which is already high, and we end up with a regularization of 15,940 euros. With the reminder costs, the total bill is more than 18,800 euros,” explains Dylan, originally from from Machelen. “When the invoice was sent, my father was hospitalized and we were not able to react directly. Once he left the hospital, the amount was debited from his bank account following the monthly direct debit. I “I quickly contacted the bank, within 24 hours, to block this domiciliation. Since then, we have received formal notices ordering us to pay an amount of 18,881 euros under penalty of having a visit from a bailiff,” explains -he.

The company, whose name we will not give as we have not yet received a response from them, indicated to its clients that they have not communicated their index for more than two years, which justifies in part of this astronomical regularization. “Following the war in Ukraine, prices exploded. As surprising as it may seem, our variable contract was transformed into a fixed contract without our agreement. Following this, the bill ballooned. Obviously, it was up to us to take steps with the company to modify the contract, but we never asked to move to a fixed contract,” Dylan continues.
Upon further information, it appears that the company has adapted its offer following the conflict in Ukraine. “The world continues to evolve. We therefore adapt our products and services to the wishes and needs of our customers, but also to changes in the energy market,” explains the company in a letter sent to its customers. “Your current rate is no longer active. Your new contract will begin automatically at the end of your current contract; you do not need to take any action yourself. After reaching record levels over the past two years, energy market prices have recently declined. Your new fixed rate takes this reduction into account.”

However, quite the opposite happened. Now, Dylan and his father don’t know how they can get out of this situation. Still in a letter to customers sent during the month of September 2023, the company in question confirms that many people have received exorbitant regularizations.
“This year, like many people, you received a high annual energy bill. We are aware that this surprise is unpleasant. The unprecedented high energy prices of the past year are the main reason for such a significant increase. To avoid a high annual bill, you can increase the amount of your monthly deposit. If you are experiencing financial difficulties, you can postpone or spread the payment of your bill,” concludes the company.
