Building on the popular success of recent months, the Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC) plans to increase the number of àVélo stations and bikes, and extend the service almost everywhere in Quebec City, including the popular Beach station on Promenade Samuel-De Champlain.

At least that’s what the president of the RTC, Maude Mercier Larouche, said Monday morning at a press briefing.
By 2024, there will be 115 stations and 1,300 bikes, although the original plan called for 100 stations and 1,000 bikes at that time.
This is because the bar of 500,000 trips for the current season – which continues until October 31 – has been crossed. The objective of 350,000 trips was reached mid-season.
The precise location where the new stations will be placed will be announced later, but the RTC is already promising to extend further than the city center. At least one bicycle station will be located at the Plage station, which was inaugurated at the beginning of the summer.
The ÀVélo service operates from May 1 to October 31. Consideration is currently taking place to extend the season, but this does not depend solely on the RTC, added President Mercier Larouche.
Suburbs and Lévis
Access to viable transport (ATV) welcomed this acceleration. “The organization hopes that the next deployment seasons will be done with a view to territorial equity, by better serving areas with a high rate of social and material deprivation, such as Vanier, Maizerets or Saint-Rodrigue, and by better serving the suburbs,” we could read in a press release issued Monday noon.
ATV also hopes for “a deployment scenario for àVélo in Lévis”. In recent weeks, the mayor of Lévis, Gilles Lehouillier, said he was studying this hypothesis for his city.
On Monday, Mr. Lehouillier confirmed that àVélo could appear in Lévis as early as next year. “It interests us to the highest degree.” A meeting is planned for October with the RTC and the City of Quebec. He believes that this could be interesting for Lévis, particularly in the context where he wants to set up a multifunctional path on Guillaume-Couture and that he is working with Bruno Marchand to promote a better cycle link on the Quebec bridge. .
