Experience the Magic of the 8th Festival of Lights in Murten (FR)

2024-01-20 21:38:43

The 8th edition of the Festival of Lights takes place from Wednesday until January 28 in Murten (FR). The organizers expect more than 50,000 visitors to the event’s more than 20 artistic displays.

The arteplages are offering more live performances and works of art combining various techniques this year than in 2023.

“In addition to artists from Switzerland, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Italy, Poles and Ukrainians appear on the guest list for the first time,” the organization said.

In addition to the 25 artists, the event, which occupies several locations in the medieval city of Friborg, calls on no less than 300 volunteers. The festival, which intends to once again become an unmissable event in the winter season, also requires 325 projectors and around 4,500 lanterns on Lake Murten.

Living portraits on a facade

One of the highlights is the “extraordinary” screening called “Le Grand Mix à Morat”, produced by the French creative duo Inook. Works of art chosen from those of the Natural History Museum and the Friborg Museum of Art and History must transform the facade of the school building into living portraits.

Well-known songs from different genres are performed simultaneously. Another intense moment of the event in the Lacois city, the show “Tanz der Schatten” tells a fable of happiness through the eyes of a young girl. The “show”, combining dance and light, takes place every evening on several occasions.

Ukrainian dancers

To create this enchanting universe between shadow and light, Moravian artist Adrian Scherzinger collaborates with the internationally known Ukrainian dance troupe Verba Shadow. It was planned to present the project during the previous edition, but the war situation in Ukraine decided otherwise.

The annual economic impact of the Morato event is estimated at 4 million francs per edition, the organizers announced during Tuesday’s press conference. Almost half of the visitors come from outside the canton of Fribourg, namely the cantons of Bern, Vaud and Neuchâtel.

Last year, the Morat Festival of Lights saw its attendance decrease for its 7th edition due to unfavorable weather. The event then attracted 51,000, compared to just over 60,000 during the previous edition. In 2020, just before the coronavirus pandemic, the event had record attendance, with more than 90,000 visitors.
