The Bern Spring Fair (BEA) opened its doors on Friday for its 70th edition. Unlike other similar meetings, it does not know the crisis and attracts many French-speaking people. Immersion in one of the most popular events in Switzerland.

The official ceremony brought together the best of Bernese, starting with Federal Councilor Albert Rösti. The head of DETEC is, to say the least, a regular at the place: “Already as a child, I came here with my father to herd the cows”, he proudly declared in the 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The inevitable horses

However, the real stars were not on the stage set up for the occasion, but under the tents dedicated to the animals. Moreover, Albert Rösti did not need to be asked to go and find his great friends the animals. One certainty: the Federal Councilor knows how to hold the horses’ bridle. “They don’t know they are stronger, that’s my advantage.”

The equestrian hall has been an attraction for all BEA visitors for decades. “We have been present every year for thirty years so yes, we try to reproduce what we had when we were children”, says a visitor from the canton of Fribourg, accompanied by her children.

The fair and its affluence is a perfect opportunity to promote the Franches-Montagnes, the famous Jura horse. “It is the biggest fair in Switzerland, it is important that the public, the population also understands why the State must support the last breed of Swiss horses”, explains Pauline Queloz, manager of the Federation of Franches-Montagnes.

A showcase for exhibitors

Unlike other fairs, the BEA is not experiencing the crisis despite two editions canceled due to Covid-19. No less than 300,000 visitors are expected over the next ten days around 900 exhibitors and 600 animals.

The success of the meeting motivates several French-speaking winegrowers to bring out their most beautiful dialect to seduce new palates. “In Romandie, most people know lots of winemakers, they have lots of cellars. In German-speaking Switzerland, people think more: ‘I have my winemaker, my dentist, my hairdresser’. Customers in German-speaking Switzerland are much more faithful”, greets Stéphane Sandoz, winemaker at Concise (VD).
