Q: I want to buy a vehicle with automatic transmission and higher, so more practical in winter and in which it is easier to get into. After my visits to dealerships, I selected the following models: 2023 Honda HR-V LX and 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Touring. I eliminated the Mazdas. I have yet to see the Toyota Corolla Cross. However, in all these vehicles, rear visibility is poor and blind spots are terrible for me. I am advised that the exterior mirrors are equipped with warning devices to correct this problem. What do you think ? Do you have any suggestions ? —Carole B.
A: This visibility problem goes back several years. The rear view camera (standard on all new vehicles sold in Canada since May 2018) partially corrects this problem, but only in maneuvers. The driving assistance you are referring to is commonly referred to as “blind spot sensors”. Since a moment of distraction can quickly arrive, monitoring blind spots can help you, but that does not relieve you of your duty as a motorist to take a look yourself. Among the suggestions, favor a vehicle whose “B” (middle) and “C” (rear) pillars are not too wide and make sure that the desired vehicle has a rear windshield wiper. Besides the blind spot sensors, you might also consider (when available) the reverse traffic alert system. Useful in low-speed maneuvers (in the parking lot of a shopping center, for example).

Q: Does the 2023 Lexus NX350h have the same power cable corrosion issue as the Toyota RAV4? — Eric C.
A: The simple answer is no. Only the RAV4 experienced this problem. No such issues have been reported on other hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles manufactured by Toyota or any of its subsidiaries.
This answer written about ten days before its publication in The Press + (the 1is May) had a strange twist a few hours later in court. Indeed, during the hearings opposing it to a consumer group in the case of corroded cables, Toyota acknowledged that the RAV4 (hybrid and Prime) was not the only vehicle affected. The Highlander hybrid (2020-2022) Venza (2021-2022), Lexus NX 350h (2022), Lexus NX 450h+ (2022) and the Sienna (2021-2022) are added to this list. Currently, no 2023 vehicles are on this list.

Q: I purchased a 21′ Alto travel trailer last year that weighs 3500 lbs loaded. I own a 2019 Toyota Highlander with a V6 engine. Although my Toyota is able to tow the trailer, I find that it moves a little when traveling. I am thinking of changing vehicles to improve driving. However, I don’t plan to buy a van and I want to stay with an SUV that fits in multi-storey parking lots. In trailer forums, there are vehicle suggestions, but it’s not easy. The most recommended vehicles are the Volkswagen Atlas, Honda Pilot, Grand Cherokee and Ford Explorer. I wonder if I would significantly improve driving with one of these vehicles and which brands to choose. — Gaston B.
A: Before embarking on a new purchase, do you use torsion and sway control bars? No ? So maybe these will reduce or eliminate the “it moves a little bit” that annoys you and give you more confidence behind the wheel. To answer your other questions, out of all your choices, the Pilot comes across as the most consistent choice of the bunch, but I doubt the improvement will be significant.

Q: Regarding your article on Michelin tires for electric cars, you do not mention whether Michelin has already marketed this type of tire for electric vehicles. I have a 2020 Chevrolet Bolt and I will need to change my tires soon, and I would like to fit it with tires designed specifically for an electric vehicle. If not, what do you think would be the best company, or should I wait a few months for the commercialization of these? —Richard B.
A: It’s hard to tell you which is the best company as we haven’t evaluated all the offers. That said, Michelin already markets these tires for electric vehicles. Other well-known brands also offer them. We suggest that you establish your criteria (durability, price, type of use, warranty, etc.) before going to a multi-brand establishment.
