While we all have our eyes glued to our screens, some experts are predicting the death of the smartphone. Should we believe them?
A few months ago, Humane presented its AI Pin, an alternative to the smartphone that hangs on the chest and which does not have a screen. At most, an overhead projector designed to reconnect us to our environment. But this is not the only project of its kind, and even Sam Atlman is getting involved with a secret project which, too, should replace the smartphone.
Because with the progress of AI, we are predicting the end of an object that has profoundly transformed our daily lives: the smartphone, in barely ten years. This is what some experts interviewed by the French online magazine explain 20 minuteslike Damien Douani, expert in innovations, cultures and uses of digital technology, who affirms that there is a race to replace the smartphone.
It must be said that before its arrival in the form of the smartphone, few people would have been able to predict the impact of the smartphone on our lives and on society. Would the end of the smartphone mark such an abrupt change?
If some see the replacement of the smartphone as virtual reality headsets like the Apple Vision Pro, others see it more as assistants using AI, which might be a bit like JARVIS from the Iron Man franchise, an assistant who would be always by our side, and which would allow us to recover no less than seven hours of our life! (Because that is how much time some people spend on their smartphone).
But the smartphone also fulfills a notion of entertainment which will be absent from these screenless alternatives. Can they really replace our phones?
