Burkina: Experts reflect on population growth
Ouagadougou, July 27 (AIB) – Experts had discussions on Wednesday, initiated by the General Directorate of Economy and Planning (DGEP), on the issue of the increase in the Burkinabe population.
“On the sidelines of the commemoration of World Population Day, we have effectively chosen the theme which is the interaction between demography and security”, indicated the Deputy Director General of Economy and Planning, Mahamadou Bokoum.
According to him, the meeting called ”24 hours of debate on demography” is an opportunity for experts, researchers and students to reflect on the issue of the growing population of Burkina Faso.
Mr. Bokoum spoke on Wednesday in Ouagadougou, during the opening of a public conference under the theme “Demography and security in Burkina Faso”.
He pointed out that after the 2021 conference on demography, that of 2022 always evokes the demographic question which is very difficult to master.
During this conference, Mahamadou Bokoum stressed that specialists will address topics on the spatial distribution of the population, migrations and security in connection with demography.
In his opinion, the experts will also dwell on the evolution, solutions, challenges and prospects of galloping demography in the country.
“This meeting will allow the rulers to understand the major issues in order to take charge of the demographic question in the spatial distribution of the country”, he added.
The representative of the Secretary General (SG) of the Minister of Economy, Finance and Prospective, Abel Kalmogo, noted that the population of Burkina has increased from 14 million inhabitants in 2006, 20.5 million in 2019 with an average annual growth rate of 2.9%.
For Mr. Kalmogo, the population will double in 2043 if this trend continues.
According to him, this demographic dynamic is the result of high fertility and a relative decline in infant mortality.
According to him, 45% of the population is under 15 years old and this leads to a strong social demand that the public authorities are struggling to meet the needs.
“In 2018, due to the large number of young people in the Burkinabè population, a deficit of 3,082.4 billion CFA francs was recorded as an aggregate gap between consumption and labor income among people aged 0 to 26. . This deficit represented 34.6% of 2018 GDP,” he revealed.
Albel Kalmogo added that this deficit weighs heavily on the country’s ability to meet basic social needs such as education and health.
