Explanation of the alleged spectrum recorded by an athlete in the United Kingdom

A tremendous scare was given to the athlete Chris Randall when he was going through Red Pike, a mountainous area in Wasdale, United Kingdom, y recorded what appeared to be a ghost walking in the middle of the fog.

It’s creepy to see it out of the corner of your eye and think it was someone else moving”, assured Randall, who posted the video on his Twitter account and it did not take long for it to go viral.

But it wasn’t a ghost the curious phenomenon captured by the athlete is known as the Brocken spectrum.

What Randall saw was his shadow cast in the mist.

Why is it known as the Brocken spectrum?

“This phenomenon, known in German as Brockengespenst or mountain specter se displayed in the presence of fog or mist, during a sunny day when the sun shines from behind the person observing it”, explained in an article the portal Hipertextual.

The vanguard notes in another publication that the story goes back to Germany, “where the frequent fogs and low-altitude accessibility of the Brocken, a peak in the Harz Mountains, have created a local legend from which the phenomenon takes its name. The Brocken specter was observed and described by Johann Silberschlag in 1780. Since then it has often been recorded in German literature when talking about, for example, the devil and witches.”.

The athlete was surprised by the reaction to his publication and appreciated such an impact.

“Tweeted my brocken spook yesterday, got a few likes, had lunch, finished work, went with my friends. Woke up and 1.7 million views and 80k likes later and phone still freaking out ???????? thanks for all the love ❤️,” Randall wrote.
