Pennsylvania has an area of 119,282 square kilometers and is located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States.
Pennsylvania is covered almost entirely by mountains, as well as a series of rolling foothills, mesas, and ridges that are dotted with valleys. About 50% of the state’s land area is covered by forests, and the only lowlands (Atlantic coastal plains) are located in the extreme southeast of the state.
The Appalachian Mountains run through central Pennsylvania. The Allegheny and Pocono mountains form the largest massifs in the state. Located in the southern part of the state, on a ridge of the Allegheny and Appalachian mountains, is Mount Davis, the highest point in Pennsylvania, rising to a height of 979 meters. Blue Mountain, located to the east of Pocono Mountain, is made up of a 240 kilometer long ridge, which forms part of the eastern edge of the Appalachian Mountains.
Pennsylvania is home to deeper and more useful rivers than any other US state. Important rivers include the Delaware, Ohio, Potomac, Pine Creek, Allegheny, Beaver, Monongahela, and the Susquehanna River. Located in north-central Pennsylvania is Pine Creek Gorge, a 76 km-long gorge carved into the Allegheny Plateau by the Pine Creek River.
He Delaware Water Gap, on the border of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, was formed when the Delaware River cut a deep path through a ridge of the Appalachian Mountains on its way to the sea. The lowest point in the state is located on Lake Erie, at 0 meters above sea level.

Pennsylvania borders New York State on the north; by Delaware to the southeast; through Maryland to the south; by West Virginia to the southwest; by Ohio to the west and by New Jersey and the Delaware River to the east. It is also bordered by Lake Erie and the Canadian province of Ontario to the northwest.

The official flag of Pennsylvania is the state coat of arms on a blue background (by law, the same as the United States flag).
The Pennsylvania coat of arms features a shield surmounted by a North American bald eagle, flanked by horses, and adorned with symbols of Pennsylvania’s strongholds: a ship that carries state commerce to all parts of the world; a clay-red plow, a symbol of Pennsylvania’s rich natural resources; and three golden sheaves of wheat, representing fertile fields and the wealth of human thought and action in Pennsylvania.
An olive branch and a stalk of corn are crossed below, as symbols of peace and prosperity. The state motto, “Virtue, Liberty and Independence,” is emblazoned below. Above the coat of arms is a bald eagle, representing Pennsylvania’s loyalty to the United States.

What is the origin of the name “Pennsylvania”? Pennsylvania originates from the surname Penn and the Latin form “silvanus” which together mean “The Woods of Penn”. Pennsylvania is a lushly vegetated territory named after British Admiral William Penn (1621-1670), who had lent a large sum to King Charles II of England. The monarch returned part of the debt in this way to his son.
