Description

On May 15, at 12:00, the Basque Museum of the History of Medicine will inaugurate the Microscope room on the 3rd floor of the Central Library Building on the Bizkaia Campus (Leioa). The room is part of the Museum’s Permanent Exhibition, which has fifty microscopes from public health institutions and private donations.

Among other notable objects, the exhibition includes the first transmission electron microscope of the UPV/EHU, which was acquired in 1972, when the Leioa Erandio area was inaugurated. The rest of the collection is dated from the mid-19th century to the end of the 20th century. Exposed on a shelf, they are arranged chronologically along with other accessories: eyepieces, objectives, condensers from different periods, and blades used to cut tissues and samples.

The history of microscopes is synthesized in a wide series of explanatory panels that explain the findings made with them and the interest they have had in the past and continue to have today in the diagnosis of diseases, in the identification of microorganisms and in all fields of Health Sciences.
