A few weeks after the death of its creator, the British house is offering a two-part exhibition around one of its favorite products.
The corset by Vivienne Westwood
From restraint to glamour, from concealed to ostentatious: by revisiting the corset in its collections from the end of the 1980s, Vivienne Westwood will have definitely been able to give it new letters of nobility and inscribe this piece of the wardrobe both in its brand heritage and in pop culture.
Presented these days in the Parisian boutique of the label, the exhibition Vivienne Westwood Corsets looks back at how “The Queen of Punk”, Andreas Konthraler – artistic director of the brand since 2016 – and their teams have reclaimed this underwear from 1987 until today.
On the program: a selection of archival pieces, retrospectively, but also contemporary creations intended to highlight the key role of the corset in the house’s collections as well as its “intrinsic links to historical dress, culture and fine arts”.
By uniting historical elements with her singular perception of the spirit of the times, Vivienne’s corsets have become works in their own right offering a new meaning, both social and poetic.
From corset to jewelry, a variation of Westwood heritage
If this event allows you to navigate between the techniques and materials applied to corsetry, it also allows you to discover the jewelry collection inspired by the exhibition.
Designed in a limited edition, this one features a charm representing the corset Westwood Portrait first presented as part of the Vivienne Westwood Harris Tweed Fall-Winter 1987-1988 collection. Here declined in gilded metal and pearls, it stands out as the starting point of a mini-capsule including in particular necklaces and a bracelet.
After Paris, the Vivienne Westwood Corsets exhibition will travel across the Channel and will be presented from May 8 to 21 at the brand’s London flagship, on Conduit Street, on the occasion of the London Craft Week.
